Evan Horowitz of The Boston Globe writes about the complex relationship between homelessness, housing affordability and poverty.Horowitz suggests that the connection between housing affordability and homelessness is stronger than the connection between poverty and homelessness. While unemployment and poverty rates increased during the Great Recession, homelessness rates were not significantly impacted and home prices declined to a level that made basic shelter more affordable to low-income households. He also emphasizes that homeless rates in states with the most expensive housing markets, such as New York and Massachusetts, are the highest nationwide, even though the average incomes are higher in those states. (The Boston Globe, August 24)
