Sons, Daughters, and Sidewalk Psychotics: Mental Illness and Homelessness in Los Angeles
by Neil Gong
Scheduled dates:
Mondays, 10/12, 10/26, and 11/9 (Noon – 1:15pm)
Professor Neil Gong, a sociologist and researcher of psychiatric services, homelessness, and social order, presents the history (including deinstitutionalization), current data, and the choices (and lack of them) we have today in addressing mental illness. Through stories of individuals and the systems they must navigate, he makes clear the anomaly of services available, based on class and income. He asks us to confront questions of priorities all our communities are facing, of urban policy, personal freedom, and what it would take to create a system that would meet the needs of patients, their families, and our communities at large. Published in 2024, it is both relevant and accessible in style.
