BRING BACK YOUR PEOPLE –Ten Ways Regular Folks
Can Put a Dent in White Christian Nationalism
by Aaron Scott
A Zoom Book Discussion sponsored by the Education and Advocacy Committee of the Boise/Ada County Homeless Coalition—facilitated by Jim Grunow, a member of the Committee
Wednesdays, March 18, April 1 (no fooling), April 15, 2026
12:00 -1:15 p.m.
In addition to reading about homelessness, the Homeless Coalition’s book discussion group explores issues that we think could contribute to homelessness and housing insecurity by sustaining or promoting systemic causes of poverty.
Here is what some reviewers are saying about the book:
“Be prepared to laugh, cry, and be inspired to organize, organize, organize. I can think of no book more relevant in these dark, dangerous, but also opportune times.” –Rev Dr. Liz Theoharis, author theologian, pastor, and anti-poverty activist
“Mandatory reading for anyone needing an anchor, a lifeboat, and a laugh in this stormy political moment.” –Rahna Epting, executive director of MoveOn
“A must-read for anyone interested in counter-recruiting from White Christian nationalism that shapes this country’s history and present.” –Cedar Monroe, author of Trash: A Poor White Journey
Some words about the author:
Aaron Scott is a church worker, organizer, leader with the Poor People’s Campaign, and co-founder of Chaplains on the Harbor. A second-generation preacher, and third-generation organizer, he is a trans father and a Christian who grew up in poverty. He and his family live in Washington state.
A Word from Jim, your Facilitator:
Some of you may be asking why a Homeless Coalition is addressing White Christian Nationalism (WCN). A friend of mine who knows far more about this relationship than I shared these words with me:
“Generally, WCN is an ideology of authoritarianism and wealth mongering that creates policies and systems that keep poor people poor and limit their access to resources and support. Then WCN utilizes scapegoating to blame poverty conditions on “others” like immigrants, queer folks, and BIPOC. WCN perpetuates poverty and those in power who promote WCN use fear tactics to make sure that communities fight with one another instead of building and leveraging power to oust those who benefit from our exploitive systems.”
